Below is Reuben Pantier's poem in Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters.
Reuben Pantier has interesting character traits. One could picture him as an indecisive person who does not have worries. One night, in a room in the Rue de Rivoli, I was drinking wine with a black-eyed cocotte, And the tears swam into my eyes, (Masters 17). proves he does not have worries because he was “drinking wine with a black eyed cocotte”;also it proved that he is indecisive because it seemed like he was happy at one point and regretted it the next. He tries really hard not to get into trouble so he can be together with Emily Sparks, but he somehow always causes mischief. As a result of Reuben Pantier’s addiction to alcohol, he is a troublemaker, hated by women, and admired by men. Works Cited: Masters, Edgar Lee. “Reuben Pantier.” The Spoon River Anthology. New York, Macmillan, 1946. 19.
